BBC commentator John Motson is often dubbed ‘The Voice of Football’.

He joined BBC Radio 2 (well before the birth of 5 live) in September 1968 and celebrates 50 unbroken years of service to the BBC in 2018.

John moved from radio to television’s ‘Match of the Day’ in 1971, rising to public recognition when he commentated on the greatest ‘Giant-killing’ in the history of the F.A. Cup: non -league Hereford United’s replay victory over mighty Newcastle in February 1972.

Since then, he has appeared on Match of the Day every Saturday of the season and has been at the microphone for ten World Cups, ten European Championships and over 150 England games.

He is a regular contributor to ‘Football Focus’ on BBC1 and a panellist on BBC Radio 5 live’s ‘Monday Night Football Club’.

‘Motty’ is also in demand at sports dinners as a speaker and has hosted a variety of functions and corporate events.

He is also a regular auctioneer at fundraising events and in demand for Q&A sessions in which he can share his experiences gathered in 50 years at the sharp end of football coverage.
